Students often find themselves in a dilemma when they are asked this question. Majority of the students select their university based on its reputation. Does this really matter? Would going to a more reputable university actually benefit you more?

Well, here is the harsh truth coming from one of our PhD expert. Unless you are going to graduate school, it really doesn’t matter too much. The curriculum for any given major is standardized across all universities. At the end of the day, you are learning the same concepts whether you are from University of New York or University of Toronto. For instance, accounting is accounting, you will learn the same concepts regardless of which university you go to. You will still learn and have tax assignments, audit assignments, financial accounting assignments, and managerial accounting assignments. The only difference may be accounting standards used. In USA, they have their own accounting standard which is US GAAP. In Canada, they have their own accounting standard called ASPE. Whether you live in USA or Canada, you are still expected to know IFRS, the international standard.

Moving onto professional designations, take the Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) for example. There are entry requirements that a student must meet in order to enroll in the CPA program, you will need to have a 4 year bachelor’s degree majoring in accounting. That being said, it doesn’t matter which university you go to as long as you meet CPA’s entry requirements.Employers recognize anyone who has their CPA equally. However, employers may give preferences to students who graduate from elite universities. For instance, if you want to enter the Big 4 accounting firms, it is very likely that they will select the top name universities first before choosing from others. But, this doesn’t mean that you cannot get in if you are from a less ranked university. This ideology will always be present because prestige firms only want to recruit the best of the best in order to maintain their prestige reputation.

Will I actually learn more if I go to a higher ranked university? No, as mentioned above, the curriculum will be the same. The only difference would be the resources that the university offers. Ranked universities are ranked according to numerous factors such as grades, the enrollment demand for the university, the political and social factors, and more. It may be true that a higher ranked university would offer more resources such as better professors, libraries, and facilities. At the end of the day, how much you learn from your program is entirely dependent on yourself. Since the curriculum and the concepts are all the same, it is about how much you take out of it. This applies to any majors that students are doing such as English, Math, Statistics, and etc. You set the difference yourself. Of course, if you want to be socially dominant you can chose high ranked universities to make yourself look more superior. No one can change the perception there because far too many people judge based on rankings. But deep inside, you should never underestimate a student of the same major from a different university. Sometimes on the professional exams honorable list such as CPA or CFA, there are some names on there from a university that you would have never expected or heard off. Never assume that you are far more superior and know more than anyone else of the same major from a different university.

On a final note, the most important factors are your study habits. As long as you plan ahead, stay on track, and fulfill what is expected of you, it doesn’t matter which university you go to. Seek help when you are struggling. It is perfectly fine if you don’t know everything because no one does. Do as much past exams as you can when preparing for your exams. Don’t be afraid to ask all the questions that you need to ask in order to maximize your understanding. Spend the time to do the work and learn from your mistakes. To graduate from university, you must be committed, consistently evaluating yourself such as your personality and study habits, not giving up, and always have the curious attitude. It is only when you a curious you start asking more questions and that will definitely increase your knowledge about the subject.
